Y8: Space is an Other 2001 – 2022

Y8 was founded with the intention of presenting contemporary art for discussion in the context of yoga. Y8 evolved from the long-term project participating, at the same time (since 1995, beginning at Pat Hearn Gallery NY), which explored the possibility of launching the philosophy and practice of yoga into the art context and transferring it to the architectural and socially coded situation of exhibition spaces. As a result of this project, yoga sessions open to the public were held at various international art institutions. The platform for the yoga practice in the museums was the Y8 floor grid, which consists of 8 x 8 square fields.

This grid was transferred to the floor of the respective exhibition space and oriented towards the east.

The programmatic subtitle „Space is an Other“ borrows from Arthur Rimbauds‘ dictum „Je est un autre“ (I am an Other) and Foucault’s 1967 essay „Other Spaces“. Other spaces (heterotopias) are what Foucault calls places, neutralise, reflect or invert. But heterotopias can also combine several spaces and placements that are in themselves incompatible in one place. A yoga centre and an art space, taken by themselves, are not yet a heterotopic place, since each allows only one type of role. In its double function, however, Y8 becomes exemplary for the non-place, for the space in between. Y stands for the function performed in space, the yoga, while the house number 8 designates the place. For Y8, this results in the following strategy: one splits the place from its function in order to bring the non-compatible into play:

The art space determines the surface, structure, light and material of the space, the yoga practice, on the other hand, decides on rule, ritual and function. A system of openings and closings connects the two subsystems and at the same time contains their self-sufficiency. Each part – art space and yoga – is thus required to expose itself to the specific conditions of the heterotopic system and to reflect the parameters of the other.

Especially for Y8, interventions and site-specific installations have been created in Hamburg by artists like Katharina Grosse, Angela Bulloch, Rita Mc Bride, Jonathan Monk, John Armleder, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Lawrence Weiner, Robert Barry, Joseph Kosuth, Channa Horwitz, Karin Sander, Robert Barry, John Baldessari, Carl Andre, Manfred Pernice, Ceal Floyer, Tilman Walther, Bruce Nauman, On Kawara, Bas Jan Ader among others.

Y8 cooperated with the Hamburger Kunstverein, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Thalia Theater, the Hamburger Schauspielhaus and the Textem Verlag, among others.
Projects with international exhibition venues: Dia Center for the Arts in NY, Whitechapel Gallery and Raven Gallery in London, K21 in Düsseldorf, Mudam Museum in Luxembourg, Unlimited, Art Basel, Kunsthalle, Kunsthaus and Migros Museum in Zurich, MAK Vienna, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein.
